Ensure Social Protection(ESP)

ESP is a network of various organisations. It is a platform developed for ensuring dignity and rights of the marginalized communities through policy interventions. socio-political-economic, cultural and religious issues through improved access to Entitlements as part of ESP. Under this we have 3000 direct beneficiaries and 10000 indirect beneficiaries. We have 20 pockets with150 families in each pocket.  (Poonthura-10, Valiathura and Kochu Thope -5  and Beemapalli -5)In  e pocket there are three community leaders who are the key change-makers who inspire, mobilise, and empower people to become active participants in the development of their communities. They act as a bridge between community and the organisation. Training and awareness classes are provided to these community leaders on various subjects according to the need. The beneficiaries are motivated to attend the pocket level meetings. To ensure social protection we form Community Convergence Facilitation Forums (CCFFs) for a particular issue.  This provide crucial services for people from marginalised communities to access government schemes and entitlements and to resolve their issues.

Advocacy, Campaigns and Collective Social Action

Cheru Resmi Centre serves as a platform for meaningful social change through advocacy, awareness campaigns, and collective social action. The Centre works closely with communities to identify issues affecting their lives, amplify their voices, and create spaces for dialogue and action. Through sustained engagement, it encourages community members to move beyond individual concerns and come together to address issues that affect the wider community.

Cheru Resmi facilitates advocacy initiatives, awareness programmes, campaigns, and community-led actions aimed at promoting social justice, dignity, rights, and access to essential services and entitlements. By connecting communities with relevant authorities and institutions, the Centre helps ensure that grassroots concerns are brought to the attention of decision-makers.

Through these efforts, Cheru Resmi seeks to strengthen the voice of marginalised communities, build collective leadership, and empower people to become active participants in shaping the decisions and changes that affect their lives. Its advocacy and campaigns are therefore not merely activities, but important pathways towards building stronger, more aware, united, and empowered communities.

LEGAL AID TO WOMEN IN DISTRESS & LEGAL AWARENESS CLASSES

Cheru Resmi Centre is one of the Service Providing Centres (SPC) under State Women and Child Department for protection of women from Domestic Violence.  The women and children in our target area are faced with various types of violence and abuse in their own families and also in society.  The main cause of this is alcoholism and drug addiction.  They are forced to adjust with the drunken partners due to lack of support from other family members, low economic status and lack of awareness about the existing law against domestic violence.  Such situations make them desperate.  Free legal aid service in our centre supported these women through legal awareness and counselling. The service of a govt. lawyer and a counsellor is available at the centre. We try to empower the victims and settle the legal disputes amicably among the parties through counselling, meditation etc.  We also settle the case with the help of judiciary. Timings:

Leadership Trainings for Youth

The Cheru Resmi Centre focuses on empowering individuals from marginalized communities to become confident, effective, and responsible leaders who can identify community concerns, address local issues, and bring people together for collective action. The initiative aims to strengthen leadership capacities and nurture a sense of responsibility, participation, and commitment towards community development. Cheru Resmi Centre collaborates with the Indian Social Institute (ISI), Bengaluru, to provide leadership development opportunities for young people. These initiatives encourage and equip youth to understand the challenges faced by their communities, develop leadership and communication skills, and actively participate in addressing social issues.

Through these trainings, young people are encouraged to become agents of positive change, taking initiative, mobilising their peers, and working collectively for the welfare and development of their communities. The programme seeks to build a generation of socially committed young leaders who are prepared to serve their communities, strengthen unity, and contribute meaningfully to sustainable social transformation.

Trainings and Awareness Classes

The target area of CRC covers 10 coastal wards with a high density of population and limited facilities. The lack of knowledge for maintaining environmental and personal hygiene gave more chances for communicable diseases and other health issues. CRC organized awareness classes for women and adolescent girls to put an end to the never ending issues like child marriage, discontinued education, drug addiction, alcoholism, women and child abuses, dowry problems, family disputes, sea erosion, use of plastic and waste dumping.  The topics on health, hygiene, menstruation, personal sanitation, good parenting, moral values and ethics, gender equality, gender justice, sex education, drug addiction, Constitutional knowledge, awareness on child rights, waste management, climate change, planting trees for environment protection were covered with the support of experts.  As part of TB elimination activities joining with District TB centre we have conducted awareness classes in Poonthura, Beemapalli, Valiathura and Kochu Thope coastal villages.

Balavedi /Child Parliament

We work for a society where children may find a safe and secure place for them to grow and bloom. We Conduct programs for the protection & prevention of children’s Rights. We treat all children and vulnerable adults irrespective of their religion, gender, caste, race and colour.We conduct programs for children and vulnerable adults to create awareness on the right to protection from abuse, harassment and misconduct. Awareness for children on various subjects like good manners, hygiene, behaviours etc are provided

Education - Tuition Program for School Going Children and Continued Education for school dropped out adults

The education of school going children at home are not taken care by the parents. Because of their occupation they are not able to help their children in their studies. They spent their time in front of TV. Their standard of education is very low.  Even the children who are studying in high school classes are not able to read and write English and Malayalam fluently. Mostly the main bread winners of the family are women and they are involved in fish vending. While the men are mostly addicted to drugs and alcohol. We conduct tuition programme at Poonthura training centre to impart quality education to these children. Evening tuition classes are arranged for children from class I to IX.  Around 40 children got admitted during this academic year.  Students secure high marks class X and XII are given cash awards. We encourage adults who are dropped outs to continue their education through equivalency exams.

SHG s and JLG s

* *CRC developed 300 Self Help Groups (in Valiathura, Poonthura, Beemapalli, Vallakadavu, Kochu-Thope, Kannanthura and Vettucaud, Veli coastal villages) to make women economically self-reliable and self-sufficient. These groups are linked with nationalized Banks for their savings and loans.  They take loans to start income generation activities in order to earn their living.  This help them to stand on their feet and support the family without being borrowed money from the money lenders. The main aim of CRC is to enhance these members’ financial security and provide awareness on various social issues. We motivate them in taking up leadership roles, participate in skills training programmes and making them aware of their rights which can be achieved through social bargaining. They lack knowledge in effective financial management.  In our groups we encourage them to save minimum Rs.100/- per member per month and deposit it in their savings account in the nearby nationalized banks. 
Normally JLG consists of 5 members of the same area who are engaged in the same business who want to strengthen their business by availing loan through mutual guarantee. CRC has collaborated with National Banks for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and have initiated 250 JLGs in our target area like Kannanthura, Shankhumukham, Valiathura, Suleiman Street, Beemapalli and Poonthura for promoting sustainable livelihood among men and women.

LIFE SKILL TRAINING – TAILORING, EMBROIDERY & COMPUTER

Cheru Resmi Centre serves as a platform of creating new opportunities to the boys and girls who discontinue their education after class X and XII. The linkages of CRC with Government and Non-Government agencies supporting the youth in our target area for providing skill training programs like Assistant food and vegetable preservation and process, Embroidery, Assistant Dress maker, Assistant Computer Operator, in collaboration with Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS). Those who completed the course successfully were employed in different firms and some of them started new venture in their own area by themselves. Those who completed the course and written their exam are awarded with certificates provided by Skill India Digital Hub. During the reporting year 40 students successfully completed the course. Our skill training instructors were given special training by JSS.

Training unemployed youth in practical activities such as paper bag making, umbrella making and pickle making.

Fish Processing and Marketing

Cheru Resmi Centre has initiated a women-led livelihood programme in the coastal area with the aim of empowering women through sustainable income-generation . opportunities. As part of this unit, women are engaged in fish processing, marketing of fresh fish and value-added fish products at a reasonable rate. We provide chemical free fresh quality fish to the people

Global English Learning Programme

Jesuit Worldwide Learning (JWL) offers the Global English Learning Programme, which provides learners with an accessible platform to improve their English language skills and develop greater fluency and confidence in communication. The programme focuses on strengthening participants’ reading, writing, listening, speaking, and overall English language proficiency.
The initiative creates opportunities for learners, particularly those from underserved communities, to gain practical English knowledge and improve their communication abilities. By enhancing language skills, the programme supports participants in pursuing higher education, employment opportunities, and greater participation in social and professional environments.
We look forward to volunteers who can support us to impart knowledge and proficiency in English language through online or off-line classes.
